How to Utilize Your Equal Employment Opportunity Office

How to Utilize Your Equal Employment Opportunity Office.
by Sarah Williams

Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) offices go by many different names, but it is an unfortunate fact that in most organizations the EEO Office is known primarily for complaints. At NIH, your EEO office is the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI); and, while complaints processing is an important part of our work, we offer a lot more to our community.

You can start by navigating through our site. I recommend using the tabs at the very top of the web page. You can consider these the focus areas of EDI’s portfolio of services.

Consulting – This section houses expert EEO guidance, details of our diversity and inclusion strategies, customer outreach efforts, and our plans for language access at the NIH.

People – This section hosts some pretty cool and interactive content such as the new EDI Blog and campaigns like Game Changers and Change Agents. The primary focus is on our special emphasis portfolios. They are engineered to cultivate positive, equitable, and inclusive employment experiences for federally identified minorities.

Training – This section provides information about EDI’s tailored curricula and our approach to workforce education and competency-building. Our Training Cadre delivers a host of training opportunities on various topics related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Resolutions – Complaints process details live here. Our Resolutions and Equity team provide unbiased counsel for individuals seeking to resolve conflicts in the workplace.

Data – Become familiar with the work of our Data Analysts. Their objective is to translate demographic data into meaningful information that drives the Agency’s equity and diversity initiatives. You can expect a lot of new great content to come from this section over the next quarter.

Policy – Policy development is at the core of the entire EDI portfolio. In this section of our website, you’ll find relevant Executive Orders, NIH policies and procedures, regulations, and statutes.

More – Last but certainly not least, learn more about the team here at EDI. ‘More’ offers biographical information about our office and the staff as well as the Agency. We’ve posted a diversity calendar here. You’ll also find our social media handles and our contact information.

Don’t forget to take a look at our videos! They’re all over the site but you can see them all collected on the EDI Vimeo page.

From service provider to customer, let’s consider this the first step in developing a closer relationship. We want you to use our services, attend our programs, and read our blog. We encourage you to reach out to our office, anytime.

*Here’s a bonus! The Women of Color Research Network wrote a great article on how to utilize and benefit from your EEO office. You can read it at: www.wocrn.nih.gov.

Do you have a story idea for us? Do you want to submit a guest blog? If it's about equity, diversity, or inclusion, please submit to edi.stories@nih.gov.
