EDI works in concert with the Institutes and Centers to advance equity and justice for people from all backgrounds. On this special day of observation, and also 365 days a year, we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his impact on civil rights and inclusivity. Dr. King sought to cultivate a movement--calling upon individuals to take action to improve their communities in any way--suggesting that the accumulation of small compassionate acts helps to move the needle in a positive direction for the greater collective.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s work and words continue to serve as examples of strength, compassion, and his commitment to equality, justice, and inclusion. In 1994, Congress officially recognized Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as the, "National Day of Service," to reflect Dr. King’s commitment to, "service for all." It is a day that serves as a time of reflection and a call to action. As we celebrate the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who devoted himself to service, we encourage you to learn more and participate in the various service opportunities offered at NIH.

Dear NIH,
Please join the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) on January 17th as we pause to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As we reflect on the life of Dr. King, we learn from the struggles of our nation’s past, celebrate advancements toward a more perfect union, and are inspired to forge a just, inclusive, and equitable future.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) federal holiday is a time to commemorate the contributions of this great American and contribute to our local communities through acts of volunteerism. We pay homage to this civil rights pioneer, distinguished orator, and esteemed leader with a virtual campaign throughout the month of January highlighting his contributions.
EDI cultivates a culture of inclusion where diverse talent is leveraged to advance health discovery. We urge each member of the NIH community to join us in the quest to make NIH the premiere place for diverse talent to work and discover. Together we can advance Dr. King’s ideals and serve as a model for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the federal workspace.
